Internship Overview

The CrossTown Ministries Summer Internship is a nine week opportunity to serve and observe our ministry in the CrossTown (Parramore) neighborhood of Orlando, FL.  CrossTown (as it is known here by residents) is an inner city community of great beauty and difficult brokenness.  Built on the other side of Division Ave in the 1880s, it was the only place that African-Americans were permitted to live in Orlando during the first half of the 20th century.  Once thriving, it fell prey to racial and economic inequalities, the drug trade, and a host of other social inequalities.  In 2010, it made the list of Top 25 Most Dangerous Neighborhoods in America because of the violence that ran through the streets.  By God’s grace, we hope to see lives transformed and for this community to thrive.

You will serve by helping lead an eight week summer camp for approximately 50 students, mainly in elementary and early middle school.  The goal of this camp is to keep our students safe from the streets, while also discipling them into future leaders.  You will have the opportunity to participate with the students in Bible study and biblical character development.  We will also do sports, field trips, meals together, and other fun activities.

You will observe by spending time in Scripture to gain a biblical framework for missions in the inner city.  We will cover topics like God’s mission in the world, His heart for the poor, justice, racial reconciliation, and suffering.  You will have free time available as well as planned activities for fun as a group.

This is an immersive internship…immersive in every way.  You will live in the community where you are serving.  You will spend much of your day at the ministry with the kids.  You will spend the rest of your time with fellow interns living together, studying God’s word together, and fellowshipping together.  Though it will be intense and tiring, we know this will be a transformative time for you, and maybe even trajectory-altering…moving you toward a life of living and serving among the poor.  Trust me, you will lose your life for the sake of the Gospel while you are here, but you will leave this internship having found it.
